Raspberry JAM is Kat Maass. Kat works from her workshop in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
A native of Germany, Kat immigrated to Canada almost ten years ago. Given a beautiful sewing machine almost upon her arrival it didn’t take her long to start creating these fabulous vintage style bathing cap bags.
When not designing, she enjoys her daughter Lilly, horseback riding, martial arts and surfing.
Since the beginning of 2013, 10% of your Raspberry JAM purchase is donated to the Horse Boy Foundation, a non-profit organization that brings the healing effects of horses to autism families.
Kat’s real passion lies in working with autistic children and their families. Her aim is to help kids with autism to enjoy a happy and meaningful life full of adventures, relationships and caring connections.
In 2010 Kat chanced upon a documentary feature film called “The Horse Boy” (watch the trailer here).
This film follows the quest of Rupert Isaacson and his wife to find healing for their autistic son Rowan. After discovering that nature and contact with horses (and other animals) improve Rowan’s condition, the family took a journey across Mongolia on horseback to seek help from Mongolia’s traditional shamans.
After returning from Mongolia, Rupert Isaacson started the Horse Boy Foundation to bring the healing effects of horses to other children and families affected by autism.
Shortly after seeing the movie, Kat started volunteering at Hinchinbrook Farm Society, a local farm that offers Horse Boy Method™ play dates and camps.
Kat has been trained and certified as a Basic Practitioner in Horse Boy Method™ One & Two and will continue her education through regular visits to Texas, the home of the Horse Boy Foundation.
Kat will also be part of the Indo Jax® Surf Charities team in August this summer and will be surfing with autistic children during a week long Autism Surf Camp.
By supporting Raspberry JAM, you are supporting Kat in her quest to raise autism awareness and acceptance and in helping kids with autism to enjoy a happy and meaningful life.
